Spider veins are small red, blue, or purple veins visible near the skin surface. They are often cosmetic, but they may also occur with underlying venous pressure or early vein disease, especially when associated with aching, burning, swelling, or leg heaviness.
A focused evaluation helps determine whether cosmetic treatment alone is appropriate or whether venous ultrasound should be considered.
Symptoms patients may notice
- Fine web-like red, blue, or purple veins
- Mild aching, burning, itching, or heaviness
- Visible veins worse after prolonged standing
- Associated swelling or varicose veins in some patients
How we evaluate this condition
- Visual skin and vein assessment
- Symptom review to determine whether deeper venous insufficiency is likely
- Venous ultrasound when symptoms or larger varicose veins suggest underlying reflux
Treatment and care options
- Sclerotherapy for selected spider veins and small veins
- Laser treatment referral when appropriate
- Compression, exercise, leg elevation, and prevention strategies
- Treatment of underlying venous insufficiency if present
