Varicose veins are enlarged, twisted veins that commonly appear in the legs. They develop when vein valves do not close properly, allowing blood to pool backward. Varicose veins may be cosmetic, but they can also cause pain, heaviness, swelling, skin irritation, and venous ulcers over time.
Evaluation can identify whether visible veins are related to superficial vein reflux or a deeper venous problem.
Symptoms patients may notice
- Visible bulging, twisted, blue, or purple veins
- Leg heaviness, aching, throbbing, burning, or itching
- Swelling around the ankles or lower legs
- Symptoms worse after standing and improved with elevation
- Skin discoloration or irritation near the ankle
How we evaluate this condition
- Leg exam and symptom review
- Venous ultrasound to evaluate reflux or clot when appropriate
- Assessment of occupational standing, pregnancy history, family history, weight, and clot history
Treatment and care options
- Compression stockings, walking, elevation, and lifestyle strategies
- Endovenous ablation, adhesive closure, sclerotherapy, or phlebectomy when appropriate
- Treatment of underlying venous insufficiency to reduce recurrence risk
- Follow-up for skin changes or ulcers
